I Want to Fly A Play for Children in Four Parts Allel Kheroufi 9781432780074 Books Reviews

I WANT TO FLY is a highly intelligent play for children written by Algerian-born Canadian author and playwright Allel Kheroufi to further extend his training exposure we should include that he received his Master in Drama from the Theater Institute in Kiev, Ukraine. But all those facts, significant though they are, are simply matrix for what he is able to accomplish in writing a play for children, which is exactly what this `book' is!

Kheroufi has taken the idea that children love to play make believe and so he respects their theatrical interest and skills and has provided a script that is not only colorful, warmly humorous, and fantastical but it also carries with it some very important psychological, social, and parenting issues that in addition to applause at the end of the performance of this play, the participating children have learned the all-important concept of nurturing dreams, making them into realities. As the author says, `to dream is to have a future' and this concept pervades this charming and hardy little play in four parts.

Homer is a duck, living at water's edge, and his dream is to be able to fly - a feat not usually accessible to ducks. But furthermore, Homer wants to fly to the sun! His friends - some pigeons, goslings, cats etc - mock Homer, `knowing' that flying is impossible for a duck, even a committed one such as Homer, and flying to the sun is beyond ridiculous. It would appear that the barriers to Homer's dream are insurmountable and the going is rough. But Homer's wise mother supports his dream and in the end Homer benefits from the input of a wise King who grants Homer's wish.

The play is so well written that each of the characters has enough evocation of the various animal traits that they become credible. It is full of charm and warmth and yet sophisticated enough so that children participating come away with the feeling that they have participated in a very `grown-up' play. This is a book/project that should be embraced by schools and neighborhoods - at least it should be read by parents concerned about the future of their special children. Grady Harp, June 12
Children love playing pretend. In my opinion there is no better way to do this than to perform a play. Allel Kheroufi has written a wonderful play that is not only fun but is full of lessons. The youngest child can understand on some level that when we try to reach for our dreams that there will be people who stand in our way and tell us all the reason they believe we can’t do it.. Homer personifies everyone young and old who sets a goal in life and goes after it. His mother is like those who support us in our dreams they believe in us enough that when we hit obstacles they are still there for us. This is a wonderful and fun play to be read or performed with your children at home or at school. I am so glad I received a copy from the author or publisher. The opinions I have expressed in this review are my very own.
